Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a chronic brain condition that causes seizures, which are brief episodes of abnormal electrical activity in the brain

Symptoms: 

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Muscle jerks or convulsions
  • Changes in vision, hearing, taste, or smell
  • Temporary confusion
  • Auras, which can be a feeling, taste, smell, or visual sensation
  • Hallucinations
  • Faster heart rate or breathing

Causes: 

  • Imbalance of neurotransmitters
  • Tumors
  • Strokes
  • Brain damage from injury or illness
  • High or low blood sugar
  • Alcohol or drug withdrawal
  • Brain concussion

Treatment: 

  • Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), also known as anticonvulsants
  • Diet
  • Surgical procedures

Diagnosis: Detailed clinical history, Physical examination, and Laboratory tests. 

Epilepsy is not contagious and can affect people of all ages, races, and ethnicities. It’s often lifelong, but can sometimes improve over time.
